Canon 500D

This was the first DSLR I ever bought and I spent ages researching what camera I should purchase. This was back in 2009 and things have moved on since then. I spent many hours of my life looking into the pros and cons of Nikon, Canon, Sony etc etc – I did actually quite enjoy the process but in retrospect I don’t think that all that time was really necessary.

As I’m sure you will read in many other places it is not the camera that makes the photo but what you do with the camera that makes it.

On Amazon now you can pick up the Canon 500D and the kit lens (starter lens) that comes with it for about £250. Back in 2009 this camera cost me over £600! There have been many new models released since then, however, my 500D is still going strong and it does everything that I want it to do.

I don’t think that is much to choose between Canon and Nikon cameras. I’m still glad that I choose Canon – I do think that they have a better range of camera and lenses but it’s a close call.

Canon have a good web site detailing their range of cameras split into different section depending on your level of experience.

Check it out at:- http://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/dslr-cameras/

The entry level Canon 1300D retails on Amazon for about £309 with the standard 18mm-50mm kit lens. Remember,  you could now buy my camera, the 500D with the lens for £250 !! Generally speaking with Canon camera the lower the number the more advanced and more expensive the camera. (A Canon 5D mark IV will set you back over £3000!!).

In the end the choice of camera is down to the individual – there are some many variables to consider – price, brand, DSLR or mirrorless etc. I have little experience with other brands but I have had no problems with Canon - I have found the camera will do everything that I want it to do and the range of lenses is fantastic. Happy hunting!

Sigma 18-200mm lens

A good all round lens this being capable of zooming from 18mm to 200mm.

Canon 100mm EF 2.8

This is the lens that I use most frequently for flower photography. It has a fixed focal length of 100mm so you cannot zoom in or out - you have to move closer to or further away from the subject matter. I first I thought this might be a bit irritating but it is in act not a problem at all.

The lens allows you to get really close to your subject if you want to and with the aperture opening really wide (F2.8) you can achieve a really shallow depth of field allowing most of the image to be 'out of focus'  - often a fantastic effect when shooting flowers.

Expensive - yes.

Worth it - absolutely !

Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM

canon zoom lens 70 200 mm
Canon lens 70 200mm zoom

An incredibly expensive lens that I am lucky enough to own.

It is a superb lens in every aspect - the jewel in the crown!

Heavy - yes.

Expensive - very.

Worth it - 100% yes
